Posted June 29, 2011 06:49:00 Police are searching for two thieves who bungled an attempt to steal a cash machine from a service station in southern Lake Macquarie early this morning.
The men were wearing balaclavas when they went into the Wyee petrol station and threatened the attendant at around 2:35am (AEST).
They placed a chain around an ATM and drove off but the chain broke and the men left empty handed.
Police say the car used in the attempted robbery had been stolen from a nearby house earlier this morning.
