The New South Wales State Education Minister has been heckled by angry parents during his announcement that Gosford Public School will move to the Henry Kendall High School site on the Central Coast.
The Minister Adrian Piccoli and Gosford MP, Chris Holstein fronted the media and the angry mob this morning to announce the decision, which has long been a contentious issue within the community.
During the March State election, the Liberals promised to review the re-location plan, which was made by the Labor Government late last year.
Mr Piccoli says the review has been completed and he is satifisfied moving to Henry Kendall is the best option.
"They are going to have enormous amounts of new facilities and I think that is really going to be in the best interests of students, both with special needs. Opportunity class at Henry Kendall will also have improved facilities. I think this is a great decision for Gosford," he said.
The Minister says the Government has responded to community concerns and the plan has been improved to include a larger communal hall and two extra special programs rooms for Gosford Public, along with four new science labs and an outdoor learning area for the high school.
"The plan now is in many ways, better than the original plans so I think this is going to be exciting for Gosford and exciting for both the students who are currently at and will be at in the future Gosford Public School but Henry Kendall as well" he said.
Gosford MP, Chris Holstein has defended his Goverment's decision, saying the Henry Kendall site was the most viable option.
"I will tell you truthfully, I liked the Victoria Park site but when you went through the ecologically sustainable communities, the bushfire buffers that needed to be in place, the traffic access...it didn't stack up. We were about getting the best outcome for the students and with the changes that the present government is going to make...comes from the Henry Kendall site," he said.
A representative from Gosford Public School's Parents and Citizens Association, Gary Johnson says he's not surprised by the decision.
"From what we had heard, the Department of Education had done its review quite some time ago and it wasn't going to change," he said.
The P and C, parents and community members argue the Henry Kendall site is unsuitable for young children.
"Mainly the lack of space over there. Kindergarten kids will be in the same environment as Year 12 kids...I don't think that will go down well and it is certainly going to have to be strictly supervised by the teachers," he said.
Mr Johnson says despite today's anouncement, he won't give up the fight.
"Hurstville Public School went through this last year. They were at a more advanced stage than what we were...They had their decision overturned. I still see that we have an opportunity if we can get a lot of community support behind us, we may be able to get this overturned. We'll just have to wait and see" he said.
